It can sometimes be easy to forget that our body isn’t exactly the same as it was yesterday; in fact, even the most basic parts of us are shifting constantly. Our teeth are no exception.

Your teeth can shift out of alignment for all kinds of reasons. If that’s currently happening to you, here’s what may be causing it, and what you can do about it.

Why are my Teeth Shifting?

First of all, it’s worth commending you on even noticing that your teeth have started to shift; that demonstrates an awareness of your teeth that shouldn’t be taken for granted. If you have started to see your teeth move, here are some reasons why that might be happening:

  • Aging: Over time, the ligaments that control your jaw and facial muscles can start to get weaker, which can cause those parts of your face to shift slightly. This can result in your teeth moving as well.
  • Missing Teeth: When you lose a tooth, your body naturally begins to deprioritize that part of your jaw by sending it fewer nutrients. That can result in bone shrinkage, which can in turn cause your teeth to move to fill the gap.
  • Tongue Thrust: You may be using your tongue to put pressure on your teeth when you talk, swallow, or while resting. This is called tongue thrust, and over time it can cause your teeth to be pushed outward, giving you what’s called an open bite.
  • Bruxism: Grinding your teeth, also known as bruxism, can put an incredible amount of pressure on your teeth. This can change their shape, which will naturally alter how you hold your jaw. Over time, this can make your teeth fall out of alignment.

What Can I Do About My Misaligned Teeth?

If your teeth have fallen extremely far out of alignment, you might want to talk to your dentist about orthodontic treatment. This involves more than metal braces; Invisalign, for example, can straighten your teeth using clear plastic trays that are nearly invisible.

Veneers can also be used to get a straighter smile. Your dentist will shape your enamel, and replace the top layer with a thin shell of porcelain. These shells are perfectly aligned with each other, so they can give you the appearance of a perfectly straight smile!
