Invisalign clear aligners offer patients a wide range of benefits that cannot be obtained with traditional metal braces. From fewer food restrictions and flexibility to faster results (on average) to an easy-to-maintain solution, they are the preferred choice among teenagers and adults. But how can they affect a person’s speech? Will a lisp form? Read on to discover what you can expect and why you shouldn’t worry once you start wearing Invisalign.
What Kind of Speech Changes Can You Expect with Invisalign?
When you begin wearing your new Invisalign clear aligners, you should expect to notice a slight change in your speech. This alteration is only temporary, so you do not need to be worried. It is important to realize, however, that their placement, although slim, is still a foreign material in your mouth. This requires your tongue, teeth, and lips to work together a bit differently to form words and sounds.
You might develop a minor lisp initially, making it harder to pronounce certain sounds, such as “z” or “s.” The added space of your aligners will likely cause your tongue to struggle to move against your teeth, so that certain words might sound different.
You should also not be concerned if you need to speak slowly or begin to slur your words, as this is normal. Over time, you will not notice your aligners as much, making it easier to speak.
How to Speed Up the Adjustment Phase & Speak Normally
Naturally, most patients want to speed up their adjustment phase. Sounding different when you talk can make you self-conscious, but again, this change is only temporary. In fact, there are ways you can hurry this process, including:
- You can practice certain words, sounds, phrases, or syllables at home until they become easier to pronounce.
- You can try reading a book out loud at home while wearing your aligners. If you prefer to read alone, you can, or you can have someone listen to you.
- You can record yourself reading a book or saying a few sentences. This allows you to hear yourself to know what you need to work on.
- Do not rush yourself when talking to others. Speak slowly.
- Maintain good posture while talking, as it allows air to flow through your larynx easily.
Developing a lisp or minor speech impediment while wearing Invisalign should not be a deterrent. This temporary change will quickly go away, allowing you to enjoy the full advantages of a clear, more discreet orthodontic experience.
